Teaching Children That Everything Belongs to God

Have you ever received a gift that was so special you wanted to take excellent care of

it?

Maybe it was a new bicycle, a favorite book, a pet, or money for your birthday. Although

the gift was given to you, someone trusted you to use it responsibly.

The Bible teaches us that everything we have is a gift from God. He created the world

and everything in it. Our money, time, talents, bodies, possessions, and opportunities

ultimately belong to Him.

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” — Psalm 24:1

Understanding this truth helps us become wise and faithful stewards.

An owner is the person to whom something belongs. A steward is someone trusted to

care for what belongs to the owner.

God is the owner, and we are His stewards.

Imagine that a friend lets you borrow a favorite toy. Because the toy belongs to your

friend, you should treat it carefully and return it in good condition. In a similar way, God

trusts us to take care of His creation and use His gifts wisely.

This does not mean that we cannot enjoy the things God gives us. God wants us to

enjoy His blessings with gratitude. He also wants us to remember where those

blessings came from.

Stewardship is often connected with money, but it includes every area of life.

Whether you receive an allowance, earn money from a small job, or receive money as a

gift, God wants you to make wise choices with it.

Before spending, you can ask:

• Can I give some to help others?

• Can I save some for the future?

• Is this a wise purchase?

• Will this decision honor God?

Money is a useful tool, but it should never become more important than God, family,

character, or kindness.

Every morning, God gives us another day. We can use our time to pray, learn, work,

rest, play, help our families, and encourage others.

When we waste hours arguing, avoiding our responsibilities, or using screens without

limits, we are not making the best use of our time.

A good steward remembers that time is valuable.

God has given every child special gifts and abilities.

You might be good at:

• Drawing or creating

• Singing or playing music

• Reading or writing

• Solving problems

• Playing sports

• Making people laugh

• Listening and encouraging

• Organizing and leading

• Helping people feel welcome

Your talents are not only for making yourself successful. God can use your gifts to bring

joy, solve problems, serve people, and make the world better.

Your clothing, toys, books, school supplies, bicycle, and electronic devices are all things

you can steward.

You honor God when you:

• Keep your belongings clean and organized

• Use things carefully

• Avoid wasting supplies

• Share with others

• Donate what you no longer need

• Show gratitude instead of constantly demanding more

Taking care of what you already have prepares you to manage more responsibility later.

Your body is one of God’s precious gifts. You can care for it by eating nourishing food,

drinking water, exercising, resting, and practicing good hygiene.

• Use your eyes to notice someone who needs help.

• Use your ears to listen carefully.

• Use your mouth to speak kindly.

• Use your hands to serve.

• Use your feet to go where God leads you.

• Use your mind to think about what is good and true.

“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your

bodies.” — 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

When we believe that everything belongs to us, we may become selfish or ungrateful.

We may think, “This is mine, and I can do whatever I want with it.”

But when we remember that everything belongs to God, our attitude changes.

We begin to say:

• “Thank You, God, for trusting me with this.”

• “How can I take good care of it?”

• “How can I use it wisely?”

• “How can I share it with someone else?”

• “How can this gift bring You honor?”

Gratitude helps us focus on what we have instead of complaining about what we do not

have.

Jesus told a story about a master who entrusted money to three servants before leaving

on a journey. Two servants used what they received wisely and increased it. One

servant became afraid and buried what he had been given.

When the master returned, he praised the servants who had faithfully managed their

responsibilities.

This story teaches us that God wants us to use, develop, and multiply what He places in

our hands. We should not waste our gifts, hide our talents, or allow fear to stop us from

doing good.

Faithful stewardship begins with using what we already have.

Choose one day this week to practice remembering that everything belongs to God.

Throughout the day, say:

• When you wake up: “God, this day belongs to You.”

• When you get dressed: “Thank You for the clothes You have given me.”

• When you eat: “Thank You for providing this food.”

• When you study: “Help me use my mind well.”

• When you receive money: “Show me how to give, save, and spend wisely.”

• When you play: “Thank You for time to enjoy life.”

• Before bed: “Thank You for everything You trusted me with today.”

At the end of the day, share what you learned with your family.

Gather several objects that represent God’s gifts. You might choose:

• A coin for money

• A clock for time

• A pencil for learning

• A ball for physical abilities

• A toy for possessions

• A family photograph for relationships

• A Bible for faith

Place the objects on a table. Take turns choosing one and answering two questions:

1. How can I take good care of this gift?

2. How can I use this gift to honor God or help someone?

Finish the activity by thanking God for everything He has entrusted to your family.

Everything belongs to God, but He lovingly allows us to manage and enjoy His gifts.

You do not need to have a lot to become a faithful steward. Begin with what is already in

your hands. Care for it, appreciate it, develop it, and use it for good.

When you are faithful with small things, you show God that you are becoming ready for

greater responsibility.

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” — Luke 16:10

Dear God,

Thank You for creating me and giving me so many wonderful gifts. I understand that

everything belongs to You. Please help me faithfully care for my money, time, talents,

body, relationships, and possessions. Teach me to be grateful, generous, responsible,

and wise. Show me how to use everything You have placed in my hands to honor You

and bless others.
